ELGS Dean’s Lecture in Cascais to the MA students
On 16 January, the Dean of the ELGS, Professor Luis Maria Diez-Picazo, held a lecture on key concepts of the Rule of Law for the students of the Master Program on the Global Rule of Law and Democracy.
He first outlined the relationship between the rule of law and democracy, explaining how both principles complement each other while serving different purposes: “Democracy decides who rules and the rule of law regulates the rulers”. He also explained how the rule of law existed before democracy, and how its principles evolved over time, due to changes in society and governing structures, drawing on examples of the complexity of the rule of law and contemporary attacks on the rule of law in many parts of the world. –
